The recent report that was compiled and launched budsman again brought to the fore the sad reality that racism, tribalism and discrimination is still rife, well alive and kicking within the present-day Namibian sports sector. Not only does the Ombudsman’s report expose the sad truth but it also goes further to pinpoint the causes of such racial and discriminatory incidents and also outlines how and which government institutions should pull up their socks in order to help arrest this disgraceful social ill. The revelations in the report from public hearings that were held countrywide by the Ombudsman to establish the level of discrimination that still exist in local sport 27 years after independence. As per the report, the oral and written submissions at the various hearings revealed shocking expressions, opinions and allegations of racism in Namibian sports. What particularly struck my attention was when Ombudsman John Walters pointed out in the report that the Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU), which clearly appears to have lost its relevance many moons ago, has failed and continues to fail in terms of curbing racial and tribal discrimination at school sports level. I couldn’t agree more with the Ombudsman’s report, because in all honesty, the NSSU has in my opinion failed and continues to fail in promoting and upholding the true values of diversity within sports at school level. I strongly believe it is the NSSU’s statutory responsibly to create platforms and policies - in collaboration with the sport and education ministries - that will educate the Namibian child about the importance of embracing racial and cultural diversity while equally promoting and enforcing the culture of tolerance, fair play and solidarity through various sports and educational interventions - something the NSSU has failed to implement in my opinion. If the aforementioned interventions are already in place, than they only conceptually exists and are not yet operational. Because if the NSSU is not failing, what than happened to the multiple inter-school leagues and competitions of yesteryear which produced hundreds of athletes that Namibians went on to celebrate and cherish? Let’s also stop blaming the lack of sponsors for the dormancy of school sports, I mean which company will pump its hard earned money in dead structures? It’s your duty (NSSU) to revive those structures and make sure they are presentable and attractive to potential inter-school competitions sponsors. Anyway, the only time I get when national teams (only god knows how and where they are assembled) are traveling outside the country for regional competitions, besides that, only god knows what they are busy with the entire year. I have always said there is no way you can teach a 30-something year old suddenly change and start embracing racial and tribal diversity. It’s not possible! And that’s where the role of the NSSU comes into play, it’s to accord a kid from Katima Mulilo, Gobabis, Keetmanshoop, Walvis Bays, Rundu and Opuwo an opportunity to play and compete with a kid from Windhoek Gymnasium, Deutsche Höhere Privatschule, St. George’s Diocesan College or even Windhoek High School. It’s also time for the NSSU to start enforcing, with the help of the said ministries, the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU’s) between schools, to enable them to collaborate in sports and educational activities. Over the years, the NSSU has continued and still continues to lose its relevance and moral racial and tribal discrimination in local sports and until both the sport and education ministries are bold enough to call a spade a spade, Namibian school sports is destined to follow the route of the dinosaurs. As they say, the all governmental structures worldwide operate in an ecosystem sort of a way and that means if the country’s school sports structures are in total shambles, than Namibian should clearly forget about producing another Frank Fredericks VACANCY DEPARTMENT: OPERATIONS DURATION: ONE YEAR (1) FIXED TERM CONTRACT POSITIONS: 6 X Temporary Award Officers 4 X Temporary Student Liaison Officers 4 X Temporary Payment Officers Find the full positions advert with the requirements at: http://www.nsfaf.fund/web/guest/vacancies NB: Only applications with a full CV, attached with certified copies of the required documents will be considered.
