16 ADVERT Friday, March 2 2018| NEW ERA Official Weekly Communique of the University of Namibia - Volume 05 UNAM PROUDLY ANNOUNCES NEW CHANCELLOR This will be the University’s third Chancellor since inception H.E. Mr Nangolo Mbumba (far right) as part of the stage procession during the 2009 UNAM Graduation Ceremony. The University of Namibia Council has elected His Excellency, Mr Nangolo Mbumba, to serve as the 3 rd Chancellor of the University. H.E. Mr Nangolo Mbumba replaces H.E. Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba, whose term as Chancellor came to an end in November 2017. H.E. Mbumba is the current Vice-President of the Republic of Namibia. Before Namibia became independent, H.E. Mbumba was an excellent model for education and academia for Namibians both in exile and at home in his capacity as an educator. After independence, His Excellency played a major role to stabilise university education in Namibia as Minister of Education, and in particular, the University of Namibia, which was the only public university at the time. The official handover by the outgoing Chancellor will take place on a date to be announced in due course. According to the University of Namibia Act No. 18 of 1992, article 6 (1) states that there must be a Chancellor as the “titular head of the University”, who’s functions are defined as: “to confer or grant degrees, diplomas, certificates and other awards and distinctions of the University and perform such other functions as might be prescribed”. The University Council, Management, staff and students thank His Excellency, Former President Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba, for diligently guiding UNAM during his tenure. We would also like to welcome the new Chancellor to the UNAM family. According to the University act, the functions of the Chancellorship are intrinsically linked to ceremonial academic core activities. CHINA CONTRIBUTES FUNDING TO RESEARCH ACTIvITIES IN SCIENCE The Chinese Embassy recently donated N0 000 to the University of Namibia science research activities, especially in renewable energy in the Faculty of Science.
