Monday, December 18 2017 | NEW ERA SPORT 23 Namibiaborn Kenyan youngster Muketha joins U/19 camp • Richard Mwangi 2019 Rugby World qualifier fixtures released WINDHOEK Namibia play their first match in the 2019 Rugby World Cup qualifiers against Uganda in Windhoek on 16 June 2018. The match set for the Hage Geingob Stadium in the capital is part of the 2018 Africa Gold Cup competition, which will also serve as a qualification tournament for the 2019 World Rugby showpiece in Japan from 20 September and 2 November 2019. Namibia host Tunisia on 23 June next year at the same venue before facing Morocco OKAKU on 30 June away in Morocco. On 4 August, Namibia clash with Zimbabwe in Harare and with Kenya in Windhoek on 18 August. Rugby Africa recently released the Africa Gold Cup fixtures. The winners would likely find themselves grouped with world champions, such New Zealand. Africa and the Americas are guaranteed repechage places, with the runner-up of the African qualification and the third-placed team in the Americas, play-off loser and Asia/ Oceania play-off winner competing for a place in the final, giving Africa a strong chance of having three representatives in Japan in 2019. Repechage is a practice in series competitions that allows the best-placed participants of those who failed to qualify for a place by a small margin to advance to the next round, in a way similar to the wild card system. The qualification process for the 2019 Rugby World Cup began during the pool stages of the 2015 tournament in England, during which the top three teams from each of the four pools were awarded automatic qualification for the 2019 event. The qualifying matches began on 5 March 2016. - Nampa Okaku to host Peter Shambo Marathon Namibia-born Kenyan youngster Rene Muketha has joined the national team squad that will compete in the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup set for New Zealand from 13 January to 3 February. Muketha joined the squad from Windhoek on Wednesday and is in training camp with the other lads. Under-19 team coach Jimmy Kamande on Friday said that Muketha was invited for a week-long trial in October where he impressed the coaches. He was recommended by national team coach Thomas Odoyo, assistant coach Peter Ong’ondo, Cricket Kenya general manager Josephat Murithi and Sunil Sarkar, who will handle the Under-19 side in New Zealand. Muketha, a right-arm medium pacer and left-hand batsman said: “I wanted to be part of the Kenyan squad during the ICC Africa Under-19 World Cup qualifier in July, but I had exams at the time.” Muketha, a Grade 10 student at Red Hill High School in Namibia, plays for Centre for Cricket Development (CDD Tigers) premier league. Muketha qualifies to represent Namibia internationally, as a resident but said his dream has always been to wear the Kenyan colours. There was another surprise for Kamande yesterday when a Kenyan boy, born in South Africa, David Mich Okaro, showed up for nets at Sikh Union ground. Okaro is here on holiday with his parents and his sister. “It is unfortunate that this boy has come here rather late, otherwise he would have been in the squad. If I will still be the Under-19 team coach during the 2019 qualifiers, Okaro will definitely be in the side. He is a true allrounder.” - A marathon championship named after businessman Petrus Shambo will be held at Okaku constituency in the Oshana region this coming weekend. Shambo, who is also the sponsor of the event, said his family set aside N0 000 for the Shokonawa Academy of Namibian marathon runner, Gabriel Simon Shokonawa, to organise the championship for this year and the next two years. The businessman made the announcement of his sponsorship at his Okaku-based homestead, where Deputy Minister of Safety and Security Daniel Kashikola officially launched the race on Saturday. Shambo said his family decided to sponsor the race after Shokonawa a few weeks ago approached him to contribute to the development of marathon running. “I decided the running should be held here in Okaku, my home constituency, and it should be open to runners across the nation,” said Shambo. Launching the contest, Kashikola applauded the Shambo family for contributing to sport development in the country. “Whoever contributes to sport is contributing to our health services, as sport keeps a person mentally and physically healthy,” Kashikola told those present. He said sports help people to be healthy and fit, and therefore result in less work for health personnel. Kashikola encouraged young people to take up the challenge by participating in the marathon in numbers. Distances of five kilometres, 10 km and 21.1 km will be ran during the Peter Shambo Marathon, said Shokonawa whilst speaking at the same event. Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN), Dr Shekutaamba Nambala and Ambassador, Hadino Hishongwa also attended the launch. - Nampa Officially launched...
