17 AFRICA Monday, July 10 2017 | NEW ERA Three African leaders to sue Transparency over corruption case BATA, EQUATORIAL GUINEA The leaders of the oilrich African nations of Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Congo will sue Transparency International over a case in France involving allegedly ill-gotten properties worth hundreds of millions, President Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea has said. French human rights lawyer William Bourdon instigated the investigation in 2007 by making a formal complaint on behalf of the pressure group Transparency International France (TIF). Obiang’s son, Vice President Teodorin Obiang, is currently on trial in absentia in France for embezzlement. French prosecutors are seeking a three-year jail term and a 30-million-euro (-million) fine. Prosecutors also asked a court in the capital to seize the six-storey mansion on Avenue Foch, Paris’s poshest street, which is valued at 107 million euros, and other assets worth 43 million euros. “I will hold discussions with the son of Omar Bongo and with Sassou Nguesso who are also confronting this case of ill-gotten wealth,” President Obiang said. “We will jointly file a suit against Transparency International,” he told a congress of the ruling party on Thursday in Bata, the economic Republic of Namibia MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, ARTS AND CULTURE OMUSATI REGION capital of the country. “The buying of property in Europe is not forbidden under any national or international measures,” he said. “A property bought in France with money earned in Equatorial Guinea cannot be considered illgotten wealth,” the 74-year-old leader said. In 2012, French authorities swooped on the Avenue Foch mansion, seizing it along with a fleet of luxury cars including two Bugatti Veyrons and a Rolls-Royce Phantom. Also being investigated are Gabon’s President Ali Bongo, whose father Omar ruled the country for 42 years, and Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo who both own eye-wateringly expensive real estate in France. Teodorin Obiang, 48, has also denied any charges of wrongdoing. But financial prosecutor Jean- Yves Lourgouilloux has said the younger Obiang, who was agriculture and forestry minister before his father made him second vice president in 2012, spent more than 1,000 times his annual official salary of some ,000. According to French media reports, Gabon’s first family owns some 40 luxury mansions and apartments in Paris alone while Nguesso has a relatively modest 24 Parisian properties. – Nampa/AFP Nuuyoma Secondary School Teamwork and dedication for quality education Office of the School Principal, Tel:(065)254555, Fax: (065) 254620 Enq: Mr. Monde E. Mwiihangele, Cell: 0812586020/0812582640 Private Bag 5522, Oshakati, Namibia Staff Reporter Windhoek A UK public relations firm, Bell Pottinger, has apologised over a controversial social media campaign in South Africa that critics say inflamed racial tensions. Bell Pottinger was hired by Oakbay, a company owned by the wealthy Gupta family, and is accused of using a strategy that stressed the power of white-owned businesses and promoted the #WhiteMonopolyCapital hashtag. In a statement Bell Pottinger chief executive James Henderson said: “We wish to issue a full, unequivocal and absolute apology to anyone impacted. These activities should never have been undertaken. We are deeply sorry that this happened.” The firm also said it had asked an independent law firm to review the account and the work done on it. “That investigation is still continuing and will be completed in the next few weeks. We intend to publish the findings of that report and take appropriate action,” Henderson said. The company has sacked one employee and suspended three more people. “Though the inquiry is ongoing, we have dismissed the lead partner involved and suspended another partner and two employees so that we can determine their precise role in what took place. As soon as we were made aware that we had been misled and that work was being done which goes against the very core of our ethical policies, we acted immediately,” the firm said in the statement. Critics say the work of the PR firm was to the advantage of President Jacob Zuma. Ajay Gupta and Atul Gupta British PR firm apologises for its Gupta work The South African president has faced corruption allegations and suspicion over his ties with the Guptas. Zuma and the Guptas have consistently denied all allegations. The campaign sought to emphasise the continued “existence of economic apartheid”, according to leaked emails, published in the local press. Opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) is among those to have voiced objection, filing a complaint to the London-based Public Relations and Communications Association. On Friday, the DA said the apology was a PR stunt in itself. The governing ANC insists it has played no role in the row. Critics in South Africa and media outlets had for some time accused the PR firm of presenting opponents of President Zuma and the Guptas as agents of “white monopoly capital”. Bell Pottinger said it had ended its contract with Oakbay three months ago. There has been an outcry on social media in the country about the original campaign and the statement. “There has been a social media campaign that highlights the issue of economic emancipation in a way that we, having now seen it, consider to be inappropriate and offensive. At various points throughout the tenure of the Oakbay account, senior management have been misled about what has been done. For it to be done in South Africa, a country which has become an international beacon of hope for its progress towards racial reconciliation, is a matter of profound regret and in no way reflects the values of Bell Pottinger,” the firm said. – Additional reporting by the BBC.
