Monday, July 10 2017| NEW ERA SPORT 21 Lukaku arrested, issued citation in LA Belgium soccer player Romelu Lukaku, who is set to be unveiled at English Premier League club Manchester United, was arrested in southern California and issued a citation after failing to heed noise warnings, Beverly Hills police said on Saturday. The arrest was made on July 2 at about 8 p.m. local time after police responded to noise complaints at the Beverly Hills home that Lukaku, who is negotiating a deal to join United from their top-flight rivals Everton, was staying in. “Beverly Hills Police Department officers arrested a 24-year-old male subject by the name of Romelu Lukaku Bolingoli,” the department said in a press release emailed to Reuters. “Bolingoli received a misdemeanor citation for... Excessive Noise. The citation was issued after officers responded to five other noise complaints from the same location, which resulted in verbal warnings. “These noise violations occurred at a residence in Beverly Hills where Bolingoli was temporarily residing. Bolingoli was released at the scene with the citation and was not physically arrested.” Lukaku is scheduled to appear at the Los Angeles Airport courthouse on October 2, police said. The news comes less than a day after United announced they had agreed a transfer fee to buy the Belgium international forward from Everton, subject to a medical and personal terms. The prolific goalscorer will have his medical in Los Angeles, British media reports say, before joining United there for the club’s pre-season tour, which starts with a game against North American Major League Soccer team LA Galaxy next Saturday. Lukuka has scored more than 100 goals in four seasons at Everton. - Nampa/AFP Three-time champion Novak Djokovic admitted on Saturday that he has rediscovered his passion for tennis after making the Wimbledon fourth round for the 10th time. The former world No 1 eased to a 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (7/2) win over Ernests Gulbis of Latvia to set up a last-16 clash with unseeded Adrian Mannarino of France. It’s a far cry from 12 months ago when Djokovic was bundled out in the third round by Sam Querrey, a defeat which precipitated a decline which saw him relieved of all the four majors he had held at the same time. On Saturday, his former coach Boris Becker said he had witnessed enough in the first week of Wimbledon to confirm that the Serb has rediscovered his love of the sport. “Boris knows me very well. So he’s right when he says that the passion is back,” said Djokovic. “I’ve been feeling better on the court in the last couple of months. But especially on the grass court this season so far, every match that I’ve played, I felt very comfortable. “When you’re playing well, then you’re Three-time champion Novak Djokovic I have my passion back - Djokovic Against the law... Romelu Lukaku was arrested in California after hosting a wild pool party with fellow Premier League star Paul Pogba. feeling well, then you’re even more motivated and passionate to see how far it can take you.” Second seed Djokovic will take a 1-0 career lead over left-handed Mannarino into Monday’s last-16 clash. Twelve months ago he defeated the Frenchman in the second round. “I’m delighted with the performance. I thought I raised the level of tennis,” said Djokovic after making the second week without dropping a set. “Comparing to the first couple of matches and the last couple of weeks I think this was the most focused I was on the court.” Gulbis, now ranked at a lowly 589 after once reaching 10 in the world in 2014 when he defeated Roger Federer on his way to the French Open semifinals, fired 37 unforced errors to Djokovic’s meagre 12. “It’s not easy obviously playing on grass against a big server like that,” said Djokovic of his childhood friend Gulbis who he has now defeated six times in seven meetings. “I’m very pleased with the way I’ve felt, the way I’ve played.” - Nampa/AFP Rooney rejoins Everton from United Manchester United’s former England captain Wayne Rooney has rejoined his boyhood favourites Everton on a two-year deal from their Premier League rivals, the striker said yesterday. “Excited to be back at @Everton. Can’t wait to meet up with @RonaldKoeman and the lads! #EFC,” he said on twitter where he was pictured wearing an Everton shirt. Rooney, who has moved on a free transfer, spoke of his excitement at returning to his boyhood club. “(Winning trophies with Everton) would be the pinnacle,” he said. “I really feel now the club is moving in the right direction, bringing the right calibre of players in. I want to be part of it and hopefully part of a successful Everton team. “It’s a great feeling to be back. I’m excited, I cannot wait to meet the lads, get on the training pitch and then get on the pitch to play. I’m ecstatic – I just cannot wait to get back playing.” Rooney scored the winner for Everton against Arsenal in the Premier League while only 16 but moved to United two years later for a fee reported to be £25 million. Scoring a hat trick for United on his debut against Fenerbahce, Rooney went on to play more than 550 games, scoring 253 goals to become their all-time leading scorer. Rooney’s England debut came under Sven-Goran Eriksson, aged 17, and he became the country’s top scorer with 53 goals and the most capped outfield player with 119 appearances. At United he won the Champions League, five Premier League titles and the FA Cup and was Footballer of the Year in 2010. But last season he was no longer an automatic selection under manager Jose Mourinho and also lost his place in the England squad. Everton manager Ronald Koeman said he believes Rooney can make a real contribution to the Merseyside club next season. “He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back,” said the Dutchman. “He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.” With a fee agreed between Everton and United for Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku to move in the opposite direction, the way was clear for Rooney to leave Old Trafford after 13 years. When he appeared at the Everton training ground on Saturday for a medical supporters soon arrived to welcome back a player who first joined the club aged nine. Rooney is reported to be taking a large pay cut to return to Everton, who have been recruiting heavily under Koeman and financial backer Farhad Moshiri, a British- Iranian businessman, after finishing seventh in the league last season. They have already bought young England players goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from Sunderland and Burnley’s central defender Michael Keane plus Netherlands midfielder Davy Klaasen from Ajax Amsterdam among others, spending almost £90 million. - Supersport.com Wayne Rooney
