20 ADVERT Tuesday, February 27 2018 | NEW ERA REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA MINISTRY OF GENDER EQUALITY AND CHILD WELFARE PRESS STATEMENT ON THE OCCURENCE OF BABY DUMBING IN NAMIBIA The Ministry and in particular the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare would like to hereby strongly condemn the incidents of baby dumping in the country. Whilst the Minister could possibly understand the extremely difficult circumstances that young expecting mothers could be confronted with, the Minister is calling on women and young girls to seek assistance instead of abandoning or dumping the baby. The following alternatives could be used in order to protect the baby as well as the expecting mother. mother to take care of the expected baby. A supportive and non-judgmental counselling environment will be provided by the social workers of the Ministry. make arrangements for the safe delivery of the baby as well as finding suitable caregivers for the child. By so doing, both the mother and the baby are safe and protected. registered facilities are available in Namibia where babies are placed temporarily while a permanent solution is sought. The Namibian Police Force will then trace the biological mother of the abandoned baby. is found not to be fit to care for the child, the child will be placed on the Family Register for either foster care or adoption, which is a permanent solution for the child. The Family Register contains information of available foster parents or adoptive parents and parents who were approved to foster or adopt children. that the mother could anonymously leave the baby at a safe place with a note indicating her wishes not to harm the child. the child is protected and cared for. Therefore instead of leaving the baby in a deserted place, where the life of the baby is endangered, the baby could be left at a save place where neighbors or social workers could find the baby and make the necessary arrangements for the placement of the baby. We hereby also wish to appeal to all other stakeholders e.g. churches, Traditional leaders, community to assist us in sharing the message and provide the necessary support to our young girls that do not know how to cope with the matter and encourage them to talk when they are experiencing a problem. The Ministry has social workers in all the constituencies that can provide psycho-social support to any expecting mother. Let us all take hands in protecting lives of our future generations and the health and well-being of the mother.
