Tuesday, January 30 2018 | NEW ERA SPORT 21 Federer claims 20th Grand Slam A tearful Roger Federer powered home to beat Marin Cilic in five riveting sets to win his sixth Australian Open and 20th Grand Slam title on Sunday. The Swiss defending champion dropped his only sets of the tournament before completing a 6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over the sixth seeded Croatian in 3hr 3min. Federer, playing in his 30th Grand Slam final, joined Novak Djokovic and Australian great Roy Emerson as joint top for the most Australian Open men’s titles. “I’m so happy, it’s unbelievable. This is a dream come true, the fairy tale continues for me,” Federer said at the presentation. “After the great year last year, it’s incredible,” the 36-year-old added as he broke down in tears. Federer added to his already imposing win-loss record in Melbourne and is now 94-13. His overall Grand Slam mark stands at 332-52. “It was an amazing journey to come to the final. It could have been the best two weeks of my life, but Roger played a great fifth set,” Cilic said. “I want to thank my team, you’re unbelievable. We worked hard for this year, hopefully we will lift these trophies in the future.” The roof was closed over Rod Laver Arena as the tournament’s heat policy was implemented amid evening temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius. Cilic’s serve came under immediate pressure with a whipping backhand return winner for break point which the Croatian followed with a smash into the net for a break in the opening game. The Croat was finding it difficult to settle and changed racquets in his second service game, but it had no obvious benefit as he dropped serve again after three break points to trail 0-3. He finally held serve to get on the board but the Swiss star was too good, serving out the set in just 24 minutes after a shaky Cilic opening. –Nampa/AFP Jovial… Roger Federer defeated Marin Cilic in five sets to win his sixth Australian Open and 20th Grand Slam title on Sunday. PyeongChang under threat of terrorism SEOUL South Korean immigration officials last December deported 17 foreigners who could “potentially pose a terrorist menace” to the 2018 edition of the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, according to the Korea Times. The deportees came from five unidentified countries in Southeast and Central Asia, according to local paper the Korea Times, and are all either members of international terrorist groups as defined by the South Korean government, or on a wanted list shared by a global network of intelligence agencies. The deportations were made possible through the “close cooperation and intelligence sharing of spy agencies in 50 countries,” an official at the Korea Immigration Service said. “We don’t rule out the possibility that foreign terrorists could enter [the country] by pretending to be Olympics travelers or hired workers at Korean companies. So we have to be vigilant before and during the Olympics.” Meanwhile the safety of the forthcoming sports competitions has become an ‘Achilles heel,’ for South Korean authorities. Many security experts have warned that sportsmen and fans could become excellent targets for terrorists. Today there is a high probability that Islamic state insurgents having suffered notable defeats in the Middle East, will try to take a revenge on another front particularly the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. American journalist and political analyst Sofi Mangal does not doubt gravity of the insurgents’ ill intentions. Ice arenas and stadiums of PyeongChang could be possible targets of terrorism attacks. Islamic state militants having lost control of territory and, therefore, power resources in Iraq and Syria, aspire to restore a measure of authority at the expense of numerous human victims, she ascertained. Sports competitions were in the past repeatedly exposed to extremist attacks. The Olympic games - 1972 in Munich, when members of the Palestinian organization ‘’Black September’’ killed 11 sportsmen of the Israeli national team, are cases in point. Today the Arab- Israeli conflict threatens to turn back again tragic consequences due to Washington’s provocative initiative to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel the Jewish state. The national teams of countries - participants of the international coalition against terrorism could be targeted. Washington and its allies have repeatedly pronounced themselves on their successes in the liquidation of insurgents in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Terrorists could attempt acts of retaliations. More civilians became their victims in 2017 when they indiscriminately attacked civilian targets. The extremists group Abu Sayyaf, a cell of the Islamic State who after their defeat in Philippines have possibly travelled to East Asia masked as tourists who could sneak into the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and commit acts of terrorism. Besides the safety system of forthcoming Olympic games causes a special concern where the mass congestion of sportsmen and tourists is expected. In case of terrorism threats the arrangement of sports objects in PyeongChang will not allow to evacuate the people as much as possible in a short time. A lot of them will become prisoners of the situation. Organisers have put in place top-level security measures and it will still be possible to provide the safety for all the fans and tourists coming to PyeongChang. The authorities of Germany, France and even USA already know there is an element of danger for their national teams taking part in the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea. - Korea Times Aubameyang close to Arsenal move Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is closing on a switch from Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal as Arsene Wenger looks to boost his forward options, reports in Germany and Britain said on Monday. German magazine Kicker reported the clubs had agreed on a 63-millioneuro ( million, £55 million) fee for the player and that as part of the deal Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud could move to Germany on loan until the end of the season. But the report said Giroud was still dragging his feet and would prefer to stay in England and move to Premier League side Chelsea. The BBC also reported that the move was close, quoting a figure of £60 million but said the deal would not go through until the German club had a replacement lined up. The Bundesliga club turned down a bid of 50 million euros from Arsenal last week, the BBC reported. Gabon international Aubameyang, 28, played for Dortmund in their 2-2 draw against Freiburg on Saturday but did not score. Aubameyang was jeered by his own fans on Saturday and has been told he can leave Dortmund if Arsenal met the asking price, the German club’s director of sport Michael Zorc confirmed. Arsenal lost forward Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United last week with Henrikh Mkhitaryan travelling in the opposite direction in a swap deal but Wenger remains short of options up front as the club battles to secure a Champions League place for next season. – Nampa/AFP On the move… Arsenal is close to agreeing a fee of around £60m for Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang with Borussia Dortmund.
