Wednesday, February 21 2018 | NEW ERA SPORT 23 Omitara to host football tourney in May REHOBOTH The settlement of Omitara in the Omaheke region will host the 4th edition of the annual #Nosob Football Tournament for the settlements’ teams from the 4-6 trophy competition. Tournament organiser Absalom Kuti |Hoxobeb said the tournament creates an opportunity for village teams to compete on bigger platforms and get chance to play against top players. “Rural players get the chance to prove themselves against players who play in organised football structures of the country and possibly, get seen by scouts of those teams,” |Hoxobeb said. In addition |Hoxobeb said people from Omitara and the surrounding areas make use of this opportunity to generate by, amongst others, selling traditional food and beverages. “Many people are unemployed and it is a good opportunity for them to generate funds for household usage and for school needs like buying stationery. Stalls have been free since the induction of the tournament,” he said. |Hoxobeb said the organisers of the tournament have decided that as from this year, they will partly make it a charity event to help feed the elderly and assist community members who are in need of a helping hand. The winners of the tournament ing trophy, while the runners-up ers will each get N 000. The registration fee per team is N 500 with a deposit of N00 payable by 31 March, which is also the draw date. Tura Cosmos from Omitara won the tournament in 2015; #Nossob Dream Team also from Omitara won in 2016 and Leonardville Kom Haal Hulle FC won last year. Namibia Rugby Ltd (NRL) is a new company which will take care of all the national teams and the High Performance activities, which includes the NRU’s National Academy, as well as craft new revenue streams for the union. The new company held their looked at ways and means of how to strengthen the game of rugby in the country. NBC Sport recently spoke to the new CEO Mervin Green, who shared a few details around the meeting. “The board meeting was very fruitful, as we discussed the objectives of NRL and how this newly established business arm can help professional rugby in Namibia. World Rugby, which is the custodian of global rugby, has and the plan is to take them to a more professional level and Namibia is one of those countries want to see better returns on their investment, which is why the meeting was imperative for us to map the way forward,”said Green.
