Figures in New Era’s possession indicate that education ministry departments and branches that include, among others, schools and regional offices are the biggest debtors, owing the municipality over N million. This follows a revelation by CoW chief executive officer Robert Kahimise on Monday at State House that residents, government institutions, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and businesses are indebted to the municipality for an amount in excess of N0 million. The debts are for unpaid rates, taxes and other municipal services. Edgar Brandt Windhoek EDUCATION on page 2 Over 300 farmers reap from Werengendje Operation Werengendje, which is the programme to strengthen food security in the Kavango East Region, has thus far assisted more than 300 farmers. It also resulted in more than 2 000 hectares of land being ploughed. This is after the Office of the Kavango East Governor, Dr Samuel Mbambo, injected N0 000 into the programme and the Office of the Prime Minister donated four tonnes of seeds to the project, which was launched in September 2016. The motto of Operation Werengendje, which was initiated by Mbambo’s office last year, is ‘A In the red… Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Katrina Hanse-Himarwa Hunger-Free Namibia is our Vision. Feeding Namibia is our Mission.’ Literally translated Operation Werengendje means Operation Ants or Termites. During an interview with New Era on the sidelines of the Nampo Agricultural Show in Free State, South Africa last week, Mbambo explained that ants or termites are hard-working insects that gather their food in summer. “The wise King Solomon once said ‘Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest’ – (Prov. 6:6).” FARMERS on page 2 Service station robbed of N0 000 Selma Ikela Windhoek Police have initiated a manhunt for three suspects who were involved in the armed robbery of a Khomasdal service station owner’s son, who was held at gunpoint before the robbers fled with N0 000 on Monday afternoon. The suspects drove off in a black Volkswagen Golf that was parked some distance from the service station. The incident happened at 13h10 at the Engen service station in Khomasdal in Mahatma Gandhi Street. According to City Police spokesperson Cillie Auala, the robbery happened when the victim was about to get into his vehicle to go and deposit money at a bank.
